Journaling Worth Repeating

Repetition is a fantastic and fun design feature in a layout. It can involve repeating an element or a color within a layout. It can also be the repetition of a word or phrase. This repeating of type within a layout can both be attractive and provide journaling at the same time. There are many ways to add repetition of a word or phrase to a layout.

There are several types of repetition.

• horizontal repetition. Type can be repeated in a wide, horizontal format.
• vertical repetition. Type can be repeated in a tall, vertical format.
• circular repetition. Type can be repeated in a complete, full-circle format.
• twisted repetition. Type can be free-form in a swirling format.
  

Each format for the repetition can be used in several ways on a layout. Here are some ideas:

Behind a Photo. Place your repeating text behind a photo. It can stick out in several directions or from only one side. Use it to add interest to your photograph and to provide additional journaling. In "Incredibly Edible" I used a circular repetition that was placed next to the photograph and around a circle element.

As a Background. Repetition of text can be used as a background element of a layout. In my layout "Take My Picture," I repeated the layout's key phrase over and over again. It was placed under my other page elements as a background.

Use for Title. The repetition of journaling can lead into the title or lead out of the title. It can be larger or smaller to contrast with the journaling. In my layout "Smile for Me," I started the journaling in regular type, then finished the journaling with the repetition of the word "smile." The repeated portion was also enlarged to be my title as well as my journaling.

Beside an Object or Element. Add your text next to your photograph. It can be along the edges of the photograph or beside it. In my "Smile" layout, the repeated text is placed directly beside the photograph. It provides a visual connection with the photograph.

On a Photo. A repetition of text can also be placed directly on the photo. Find a space on your photograph that would be visible and add the text. Depending on your available space, create the text in a horizontal or vertical repetition. Create your text on your photo before printing the photograph.

For a fun addition to your layout, use repeated text.
